Climbing Tours via Northern Circuit and Kilimanjaro Crater Camp

Day 1. Arrival

Our driver will greet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your drive to the hotel. There, you will have everything to ensure a pleasant stay: comfy rooms with hot showers and Internet access, sunlit swimming pool and congenial and efficient staff. Your Kilimanjaro climb brief will be conducted by one of our tour managers in the evening. They will also check your readiness for the climb and provide rental equipment if needed.
Hotel check-in starts at 14:00 hrs.

Day 2. Trekking From Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

You will meet your mountain support crew and guides at your hotel in the morning and have a short final briefing. A 3-4 hrs drive will bring you to the Western entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park – Londorossi Gate, situated at 2,200 m. Your head guide will take care of the necessary permits and registration for search and rescue services, after which the group will start the trek to the first overnight stop on this route – Mti Mkubwa Camp at 2,780 m. Raincoats or ponchos are a must on this leg of the trip as rain is highly likely in the rainforest that the trail negotiates. The support crew, who go ahead of your group, will have set up camp and prepared lunch by the time you get to the Camp.
A walk towards Shira 1 Camp follows lunch. This walk, during which you gain a further 300 m in altitude before returning to Mti Mkubwa for dinner and the night’s rest, is designed to speed up the acclimatization process. Spending some time at higher altitude before descending back to 2,780 m for the night increases your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro by alleviating the effects of altitude sickness.
We recommend that you adhere to the following rules from your first day on the mountain:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking no less than a total of 4 l of water a day frequently in small doses.
  • Do not consume any alcohol and minimize your caffeine intake
  • A Diamox tablet taken every morning before the start of the day’s climb goes a long way towards minimizing altitude sickness symptoms. Make sure you consult your physician on the use of Diamox before travelling.

Altitude-associated discomfort is a common occurrence in the mountains at night as your body receives less oxygen. Nausea and headaches are the most common symptoms. While this is no cause for immediate concern you need to make sure you alert your guide to any discomfort immediately.

An early wakeup, breakfast, and a gradual walk up to the altitude of 3,500 meters; at this point you will be able to see stunning views of Shira Plateau and Kibo Volcano for the first time.

On the whole, the passage from Mti Mkubwa to the second high-altitude camp - Shira 1 (3,505 m) is rather easy and takes about 5-6 hours. This will allow you to start the acclimatization process gradually, which is the mainstay of good trekking towards the Kilimanjaro Crater Camp.
